Another senseless death

Three seemingly desperate cowards went into a beauty salon, of all places, yesterday, and killed one of the men there.

For twenty dollars.

At 6:45 pm.

That was in daylight, for pity's sake.

Quoting the article:

"Tom Lona, a friend of the victim, said it's inexcusable that no one has come forward with information."

"'I know there's people out in this community that know who did this,' Lona told KMBC's Martin Augustine. 'They took a husband; they took a brother; they took a son. It's not right. And for what? The community needs to stand up. This needs to end. It needs to end now.'"

And Mr. Lona is right, of course, in all aspects.

Where is the outrage from downtown? From City Hall? From the Mayor? From the City Council?

Where is the meeting before the press by the police, saying what they're already doing and what they're going to do?

With more than 4 months to go in the year, where will the shootings end? How high does this have to go before there's some official notice and something done?

Remember my entry a few days ago when I pointed out a woman was shot in her own home?

"'There's got to be justice. There has to be. This could have been your father. This could have been your brother. This could have been your son. You'd want to know, wouldn't you?' Lona said."

He couldn't be more right.

Dear Mr. Kevin: Good posting. Keep encouraging people to come forward--it is the only way that this can be stopped. In Christ, Ernest Evans

Alonzo's problem is that the people he should be talking to aren't internet literate. Probably didn't stick around the school system long enough to learn it.

Wrong medium. Blacks watch television. They'll go on foodstamps and have their kids eat free breakfast and lunch at school, but they'll manage to buy a big color TV.

TV is how you reach blacks, not the internet.

Actually before you condemn residents for temporary blindness, once the cops clear the scene and head for Dunkin Donuts, those same residents have to live with those gangs who probably know how to deal with snitches.

Just tryin to help out.

Radioman,

I don't know that I completely agree with your assumption about African-Americans, televisions and computers.

And foodstamps? It sounds like you think most African Americans are on food stamps in town. I hope not.

Let me be clear, I did not and am not condemning anyone, let alone "residents for temporary blindness" or cops or anyone. It just seems as though someone downtown at City Hall and the police department should be looking into reducing shootings and shooting victims, if and as possible. I refuse to condemn anyone but the most blatantly, clearly hateful and/or ugly persons.

I appreciate anyone and everyone's attempts to help.

I'd just like to know how police can be everywhere all the time. It's their job to keep peace, not babysit the gangsters - EVERY FREAKING NIGHT. If you feel the community needs that kind of policing then it's time to bring in the military, and put mandatory curfews and have tanks patrolling the streets, and lay down the law.
What I want to know is where are the parents telling their kids that KILLING IS WRONG, ROBBERY IS WRONG, FIGHTING IS NOT NECESSARY, GO TO SCHOOL, GET AN EDUCATION (ITS FREE!)

Obviously police can't be everywhere, all the time. No one thought otherwise. Also, there have been at least a couple of us who have pointed out that there is, in fact, self-responsibility for this/these situation(s).

The fact is, most people, all over town, have trained and educated their kids that killing (and shooting) is wrong, robbery is wrong and that fighting is not necessary (no caps). There are just, obviously, some knuckleheads who don't follow these rules.

The fact is, the problem needs to be addressed. That's all we're saying. There needs to be a community-wide solution so this stops.
